Nestled in the picturesque Adelaide Hills where apples, pears, cherries and wine grapes grows, is a beautiful vineyard that was established in 1992 – Mount Lofty Ranges Vineyard.
This chef hat awarded winning vineyard was one of the first Cellar Door to open in Adelaide Hills. I was excited to stop at Mount Lofty Ranges Vineyard for lunch during my recent visit to South Australia.
To start, we had a beautiful olive organic sourdough served with airy house churned butter. The sour dough was light and fluffy with pieces of olive laced through the bread.
Shortly after, we were served a jar of pureed cauliflower topped with chicken thigh / roasted garlic floss. The puree was so light and airy with a subtle taste of cauliflower. The golden chicken/garlic floss added a dimension and texture to this starter. What a beautiful way to start the meal.
Next we were served a colourful, fresh plate of Southern Bluefin Tuna, miso, avocado puree with puffed rice. The creamy avocado puree paired well with the freshly sliced Southern Bluefin Tuna. I loved the addition of the crispy puffed price which added texture to the amazing dish. This would have been easily my favourite dish.
Wow! This next distinctively different dish was interesting – both on paper and on the palate. When I see granola on a menu, I immediately think of breakfast, however Mount Lofty Ranges Vineyard, has put a creative spin to granola, by making it a savoury lunch item, with luscious green new season asparagus and lightly whipped curd and topped with beautiful yellow and red flowers. I didn’t think I would enjoy this dish, but the different texture and freshness of the asparagus.
Following the granola we were presented with a crispy skin local chicken thigh, roasted garlic and romaine lettuce. It is very clear why Mount Lofty Ranges Vineyard is a multi-award winning restaurant – dish after dish, the chef has bought out innovative dishes that blows me away, and this was one of them. Generally speaking, I’m not the biggest fan of lettuce, however with the roasted garlic garnished on top of the lettuce, it brought the lettuce to a level which I was able to appreciate. Further, the crispy skin of the local chicken thigh was roasted to perfection. I would have happily had this dish again! Highly recommended!
The second last dish to our degustation was the Paroo kangaroo, salt baked beetroot, quandongs, and kangaroo tail sauce. In my entire lifetime, I have only dined on kangaroo meat twice. The first time was cooked to perfection, whilst the second last time, the kangaroo was awfully cooked which has made me hesitant to order again. However this time round, I was pleasantly surprised by the perfectly cooked kangaroo meat served with a beautiful rich red kangaroo tail sauce. Whilst the sauce is rich red colour, the sauce itself was light and tangy that paired well with the flavour of the kangaroo.
To finish off the 5 course degustation we had ‘Chocolate and Pistachio.” It sounds underwhelming right? Believe me, once you’ve tried this decadent rich chocolate mousse, you will want to go back for more.
With spectacular views , exemplary service and high quality dishes, I can clearly see why Mount Lofty Ranges Vineyards is considered a 5 star winery and is an award winning restaurant. I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to dine at such beautiful place, and I would strongly recommend anyone to visit this vineyard during their visit to the Adelaide Hills.
