Although I drink coffee more than I drink tea these days, I must say that I have a better understanding and appreciation for tea than I do with coffee.
I’ve been drinking strong tea from a young age as my mother believes that drinking tea after a heavy rich meal will help you digest the food better and also ‘wash away’ the fattiness of the food.
Back when I was in high school doing my VCE, I studied Japanese as one of my main subjects. One part of Japanese examination was to prepare a 5 minute oral presentation on a Japanese topic and answer the questions that the examiner may ask you in Japanese.
For my topic, I chose Sado (茶道), which is a Japanese tea ceremony which is an activity in which involves the preparation and presentation of Matcha green tea.
Due to that presentation, I was given the opportunity to appreciate matcha green tea.
Back in August, I started seeing instagram photos of this really cute matcha green tea packages and was keen to find out where I could grab a package myself. After some research, I found out that Kenko (Japanese for healthy) Tea is a Melbourne based online tea shop that specialised in premium matcha and equipment. Soon, I was in touch with the lovely owner Sam (A chef, foodie and entrepreneur), and he was lovely enough to send me a sample of his matcha in a beautiful tin can and some cooking grade matcha powder.
When it arrived, I was squealing in delight – I absolutely love the labelling! How cute is the fox? :)
Over the course of 3 months I tested the Kenko Matcha Green tea with different recipes and I must say that the Kenko Matcha Green Tea is top notch quality. The flavour is strong, slightly bitter with subtle sweetness to it and a bright green colour.
I’ve tried other matcha green tea from the Asian supermarkets but the colour and flavour does not match.
Here I would like to share with you a favourite recipe of mine, which I adapted from a website called Cooking with Japanese Green Tea. Hope you enjoy :)
You can buy the same matcha I used in this recipe here
